Irinerary performance
Milan, 2021
Performance by Alice Capelli
Materials: rope, fabric, pigments, boots
About it
I crossed the streets of Milan with my ankles bound by a jute rope. This noose, which constrains movement, serves as a poignant symbol of domestication and imposed animal training. It transforms into a powerful social critique against rape culture and the institutional education on gender diversity that is imparted to the young.Dressed in a skin-colored bodysuit and black combat boots, I made a visual statement. The white marks painted on my nipples and pubic area represent the genderless censorship of bodily fluid colors, while the black color of the boots symbolizes struggle and resistance.
Silently, I walked through Milan's streets and squares, performing an itinerant piece that confronted scenes of horror where femicides have occurred, and highlighting significant locations such as the Ponte Viola in Ortica district. This silent way of the cross served as a protest.
The rope signifies how society attempts to domesticate respectable women and force them into conforming to social standards. Through this performance, I challenge the oppressive norms perpetuated by school and institutional education.
School and institutional education: They tell you - close your legs, be quiet, cover yourself, you're old. They point out - she gives it to everyone, you're ugly, slut, what won't people do for attention. They advise you - you let yourself be used, you can't go around like that, you'll look like a disreputable woman, no wonder they sexualize you, you're playing their game, so don't complain.
In this performance, I aim to highlight and challenge these pervasive messages and societal expectations. By embodying these constraints and walking through the city in silence, I seek to provoke thought and dialogue about the roles and restrictions imposed on women and the ways in which they are socialized to conform to limiting and damaging norms.
